Essentials of College Communication

ENGL 104

Learning in college requires more than just attending lectures and taking tests. To get the most out of your classes, you must be able to listen for understanding and communicate effectively. This course will help you develop the confidence and communication skills to actively participate in university courses.

You’ll discover how to take effective notes, give clear presentations and oral reports, and participate in important class discussions. We’ll practice asking engaging questions, sharing opinions, and arguing your point persuasively in the classroom. You’ll also learn about helpful campus resources to support and develop these skills.

Designed For

Non-native English speakers who want to build confidence and develop communication strategies for college-level study, and/or those who want to satisfy the UW English Language Proficiency Requirement (ELPR).

The instructor will vary depending on the course section.
